Zurichstrasse becomes barrier-free: renovation starts on June 23rd!
Construction and renovation work along Zürichstrasse in Bachenbülach and Winkel is imminent. It starts on June 23, 2025 and the goal is clear: the street will receive a new, low-noise surface and two bus stops will be made barrier-free. This comprehensive renovation covers the section from Länggenstrasse to Alte Landstrasse and will significantly improve the quality of life in the region.
The construction work is divided into various stages and is expected to last until the beginning of September 2026. During this time, traffic will be guided through the construction area in one lane using traffic lights. This means there shouldn't be too much traffic jam and commuters can make their daily journey as pleasant as possible. During the construction period, the walking, cycling and skating routes will be rerouted via Bitziberg, Blumenau, Dorfstrasse and Schulhausstrasse. “It is particularly important for the many cyclists and pedestrians that they can make good progress during the construction work,” said a spokesman for the municipality.
Extensive measures and new infrastructure
However, the renovation work is not just cosmetic. Rather, the public infrastructure will also be comprehensively renovated. The replacement of overloaded sewer system elements and the replacement of old water pipes from 1969 are also on the agenda, as is the construction of a new valve shaft and the renewal of hydrants. This guarantees improved water drainage and ensures that everything runs smoothly. In addition, the road junctions will be adjusted to increase pedestrian safety, and new bus stops and underground containers will be installed. The bus shelters will also be renovated, which will significantly increase comfort for everyone waiting.
“The fact that the intersections of Breitistrasse and Bitzibergstrasse are also being redesigned shows how seriously the communities take road safety,” says a person in charge from the administration. The Schmiede stop will also remain in operation, with a single interruption between May and September 2026. The Seebüel stop in Winkel will also be expanded to be barrier-free by October 2025.
Transport transition as a central challenge
These measures are part of a larger trend in municipalities that are facing the challenge of reducing greenhouse emissions while ensuring a functioning transport system. According to a study by the German Institute for Urban Studies (Difu), investments of around 372 billion euros are necessary to maintain and expand the infrastructure. More and more municipalities are therefore relying on sustainable transport systems that are not only more environmentally friendly, but also improve the quality of life.
In Germany, around 20% of greenhouse gas emissions are caused by motorized transport. This makes it even more important to focus on sustainable mobility. Projects like the one in Bachenbülach are a step in this direction and require both a good hand in planning and close cooperation between the communities. All of this is of great importance for future mobility in cities and communities.
Regular information about the construction site and traffic routes will be available on the municipality's websites for anyone interested. These initiatives are not only important for the immediate surrounding area, but also part of a larger plan to improve infrastructure and quality of life in urban areas.
