Eisbachwelle in Munich: Surfers can go back on the water, but safe!

München, Deutschland - The popular Eisbach wave in Munich is now accessible to surfers again. Mayor Dieter Reiter (SPD) announced today in a message that the wave will be reopened after months of blocking due to a tragic accident. The approval follows an incident on April 16, in which a 33-year-old surfer crashed and died in the hospital a week later. The investigation by the public prosecutor has now been discontinued because no criminal responsibility has been determined. The incident is classified as a "extremely tragic" misfortune, reports the Süddeutsche Zeitung .

In order to ensure the security of the surfers, new rules were set up that were developed in cooperation with the Surfen interest group in Munich (IGSM). Surfing is now allowed from 5:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., which is particularly useful for security in the dark. In addition, the use of a self -resolution leash that enables surfers are also mandatory to quickly detach itself from your board in the event of danger. The Buddy principle has also been introduced: Surfers may only be accompanied by the wave.

A look at the security precautions

The city of Munich emphasized that before the fatal incident on April 17, 2025, no comparably serious accidents were reported to the Eisbach wave, which has been used since the 1980s. This suggests that the popularity and safety of the wave have so far been in balance. Now the city wants to regularly evaluate the security measures in order to continue to minimize the risks for future surfers.

It remains to be seen how the new regulation will arrive at the surf enthusiasts in Munich. The return to the Eisbach wave could be a welcome change for both adrenaline junkies and for the numerous tourists who visit the wave. The thrill that the wave riding offers, combined with the revised safety precautions, could ensure a new, positive chapter in the history of Munich surfing. According to the tz , the city will continue to improve in the future and to further support the security standards and to support the surfing community in the best possible way.
