Security in Munich is currently at the top of the city administration's agenda. The situation at the Old Botanical Garden (ABG) and Stachus is particularly worrying. Police Chief Thomas Hampel recently took a look at a civilian patrol on site and was impressed but also concerned about the developments. Crime in these areas is characterized by a high number of crimes, especially among young men with a migrant background.
A total of 1,284 crimes were reported in the Old Botanical Garden in 2024, including a shocking 239 crimes of brutality. A particular incident that cost a man his life in September 2024 makes the situation even more dire. Despite these concerns, Hampel estimates that a decrease in crimes can be expected by 2025. To strengthen security measures, the police now used mobile video towers, which have already been in use for the last six weeks and are showing initial positive results.
Mobile video towers and their tasks
The police have procured a total of three of these video towers, which are up to six meters high and feature the latest technology. They are equipped with a 360° panoramic view camera and remote direction and zoom controls. This innovative solution not only serves to avert danger, but also to law enforcement, like the Münchner Zeitung tz reported.
There is currently a video tower at Stachus and another in the Old Botanical Garden. The positive effects are already noticeable as the situation in the ABG has improved significantly. Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann emphasizes the advantages of video surveillance, which not only serves to prevent crimes, but also helps to clarify incidents and shortens police response times. The video data is securely encrypted and transmitted to the police operations center and deleted after 21 days.
Outlook on crime development
A look at the nationwide figures shows that crime in Germany fell by 1.7 percent in 2024, which is primarily due to the partial legalization of cannabis.
