Trendy coffee alternative: Iced Matcha Latte is conquering Munich’s cafés!

Something is happening in Munich! The “Plex Coffee” café has opened its doors in the foyer of the former film theater at Sendlinger Tor, which has been closed since January. Founder Maximilian Kamp reports a consistently positive opening and is pleased with the diverse feedback from customers. “We want to preserve the old charm of the place,” he emphasizes, keeping in line with Munich’s tradition of preserving the historical flair while offering an open café for all age groups – including families. The listed elements of the cinema bar are largely preserved and make the atmosphere particularly inviting.

A highlight at “Plex Coffee” is the Iced Matcha Latte, which is becoming increasingly popular. “Matcha is not only a green tea from Japan, but also a symbol of a special lifestyle,” explains Kamp as he supports customers with their orders. Especially in the summer heat, this drink, which is often ordered with coconut milk, is a refreshing alternative to classic coffee. The Iced Matcha Latte is often offered in cafés in particular and is in great demand.

The secret to the perfect iced matcha latte

To prepare a first-class iced matcha latte, the quality of the matcha powder and the choice of milk play a crucial role. High-quality matcha has a bright green color and a subtle, grassy smell. “I prefer oat milk,” says a regular customer, “as it gives the drink a creamy texture and balances the bitter notes of the matcha.” Other options such as almond or soy milk are also in high demand. The latte can be refined with various sweeteners, such as honey or agave syrup.

A simple recipe for the Iced Matcha Latte, which can be recreated not only in cafés but also at home, consists of a few ingredients: high-quality matcha powder, milk or plant-based alternatives and plenty of ice. To avoid lumps, experts recommend sieving the matcha powder and mixing it with a little cold water before use. Then add the remaining ingredients and voilà – a refreshing drink is ready!

About the future of “Plex Coffee” and cultural events

But “Plex Coffee” is not just a place for coffee lovers. A screen for cultural events will be set up in the back of the café. Kamp invites artists to come forward to promote the city's cultural heritage and creativity. “Whether it’s a film screening or a live performance – we have a lot planned,” he says with a friendly smile.

The neighborhood is not neglected either: “We maintain good relationships with surrounding shops such as Giesinger and Kennedy’s,” emphasizes Kamp. They are not planning any immediate expansion, but rather want to wait for the reaction of the people of Munich and react to suitable opportunities. In this sense, Plex Coffee is more than just a coffee shop - it's a new social meeting place in the city.

This initiative shows once again that tradition and innovation are close together in Munich. Whether it's a delicious Iced Matcha Latte or a cultural event, there's something for everyone here - the old charm doesn't fall by the wayside.
