50 years of Gilmschule: A milestone for Sendling-Westpark!

The elementary school on Gilmstrasse recently celebrated its 50th anniversary in July. This school was founded in 1975 to take into account the strong population growth in the southwest of Munich. [Wochenanzeiger] reports that the construction of the Großhadern Clinic and the expansion of the U6 also led to the creation of the Gilmschule. The city council decided to create a modern school location here because the surrounding schools could no longer keep up with the new residential areas.

In September 1975, the first children moved into the newly built school, and since then the Gilmschule has developed into a center for the district. In the 80s and 90s it became a community gathering place, hosting plays in the gym and creative projects in the classrooms. The challenges that arose during this time included the use of school containers, fire protection renovations and the corona pandemic, all of which were successfully overcome.

A home for the next generation

The Gilmschule is still a popular place for families in the area today. From mid-January, parents will be informed about the school enrollment modalities for future first graders. A parents' evening, which is expected to take place in February, will provide an opportunity to exchange information. Enrollment day is set for March 19, 2025.

Children who turn six by September 30, 2025 are required to attend school. But there is also flexibility: parents can decide to delay compulsory schooling if their child turns six between July 1st and September 30th, 2025. This decision must be made by April 10, 2025 at the latest after a consultation.

Look at the education system

In Germany, as [bpb] notes, the education system is not uniformly regulated. Each federal state finds its own design for educational policy. Compulsory schooling usually begins at the age of six and includes both full-time compulsory schooling and part-time compulsory schooling - that is, students must remain in school until they are 18 years old. The Gilmschule, with its relevant focus on the primary level, contributes to the education of children and offers transitions to the secondary levels, which are structured differently in Germany.

The Gilmschule is not only valued as a place of learning, but has also brought the spirit of togetherness and community into focus. With its 50-year history, it can look back on numerous successes and has established itself as an important part of the Sendling-Westpark district. Here, education for everyone is very important, and this is reflected not only in the curricula, but also in the community that has formed around the school.
