Cultural beer garden in Westend: plans for a new meeting place!

The anticipation of summer can already be felt in Munich, as two new beer garden projects are in the starting blocks. One of these projects is the “Kulturbiergarten Rummel” in Munich’s Westend, which aims to contribute to the cultural revitalization of the circus meadow with a unique concept. The restaurateur team led by Simon Neumair has big plans: “We want to create a place for encounters and cultural participation,” says Neumair optimistically. In order for everything to go according to plan, a building application must be submitted, in which proof of 20 parking spaces is a major hurdle, as tz.de reports.

The Paulaner Brewery's area, which is around 760 square meters, would be ideal for up to 500 seats. The location already offers the necessary infrastructure such as water and toilets, but the required parking spaces are missing in the immediate vicinity. Simon Neumair hopes to be able to prove the parking spaces in the nearby garage of the Forum Schwanthalerhöhe. The district committee welcomes the plans and is committed to revitalizing the area. A legal registration of an easement is required, while the financial compensation for the parking spaces at 10,000 euros per parking space would simply not be affordable for a seasonal business.

Beer garden at the Neptune fountain

While the Rummel cultural beer garden is fighting for its approved parking spaces, the new beer garden at the Neptune Fountain in the Old Botanical Garden opened its doors on May 23, 2025. Park Café operator Chris Lehner has created a colorful and inviting atmosphere, ranging from large beer benches to lounge chairs and various food stands. The celebration was opened by Dr. Christian Scharpf, the Munich economics officer, who tapped the first wooden barrel. Live music and DJ sets also offered an entertaining supporting program, as in-muenchen.de reports.

Opening times are daily from 12 p.m. to 10 p.m. until August 23, 2025. Security measures ensure that the park area is clean, drug-free and safe. Police cameras and a dedicated team take care of the maintenance of the area. The culinary offering ranges from a Moët Chandon champagne bar to classic dishes such as salmon rolls and grilled dishes that should appeal to any foodie.

Tradition and conviviality in Munich's beer gardens

Munich has a long tradition when it comes to beer gardens, which originated in the 19th century. Originally aged beer was served on river terraces and the shade of chestnut trees was a hit in warm weather. Beer gardens have developed into popular meeting places for people of all ages and social classes, as muenchen-sicht.de highlights. Whether young or old, everyone finds their place here.

The largest beer garden in the world, the Royal Hirschgarten, offers space for up to 8,000 guests, and the Augustiner Keller and the beer garden at the Chinese Tower in the English Garden are also among the most popular places in the city. As you can see, beer gardens are much more than just a place to drink; They are places of conviviality and cultural exchange where summer can be enjoyed in a very special way.
