Trouble around Arcisstrasse: residents demand opening for vice and delivery traffic!

The traffic conversion on the Munich Elisabeth market causes a lot of excitement among the residents. Mobility officer Georg Dunkel has thrown a proposal into the race, which is supposed to block the northern part of Arcisstrasse for cars. In the future, only cyclists will be on the move, surrounded by benches and plants, reports the evening newspaper . All eyes are now aimed at the upcoming vote in the Schwabing-West district committee, which is scheduled for July 2nd.

The residents are skeptical about the proposal. Again and again they complain about an increase in traffic, because vice and delivery vehicles bypass the dead end, which leads to traffic chaos. Isabellastraße is particularly affected, where the noise and the quality of life of the residents significantly affect the

The resistance grows

Oliver Scholl, a committed resident, has launched a citizens' initiative to fight for the opening of the dead end. The dissatisfaction goes so far that residents not only denounce loudly more through traffic, but also the increased exhaust gas pollution. Many demand a quick return to normal. A temporary traffic -calmed design is planned after the temporary sales container has been reduced during the renovation.

The plans for additional green areas on the Elisabethplatz are also on the agenda, and the conversion is expected to last until 2028. A temporary opening of the dead end could be considered to defuse the traffic problem. But Mobility officer Dunkel believes that the volume of traffic in the surrounding streets remains within the framework of a closure of Arcisstrasse. A view that not every resident likes.

Citizen participation and future visions

The residents criticize the process of the traffic -calmed zone as an undemocratic one and demand more citizen participation. However, some are for a positive change and bring ideas, such as benches or raised beds that could make the space more alive. A traffic-calmed zone, as it is planned here, could significantly improve the quality of life through less noise and better air-a measure that has proven itself in many cities, such as in Vienna or Freiburg, according to the Studysmarter .

The CSU, represented by OB candidate Clemens Baumgärtner, has made a clear position and demands the opening of the street for vices, craftsmen and delivery traffic. Baumgärtner threatens to put the decision on the agenda of the city council if the district committee votes for the closure. The debate about the Elisabeth market could soon also be carried into the highly political arena of the city of Munich.

With regard to the vote on July 2, it remains to be seen how the opinions of the decision -makers develop. However, it is clear that the discussion about traffic, quality of life and citizens' participation on the Elisabethmarkt is far from over.
