Career career changers in healthcare: success stories and opportunities in Munich!

On July 2, 2025, an exciting talent show will take place in Munich: “Germany’s best career changers” as part of the MFA Day and ZFA Day. The organizers of this event are the PKV Institute Munich and the Praxisnetz Münchner Ärzte e.V. The aim is to present examples of success and experiences from career changers in general practitioner practices. In times of demographic changes that are shifting the population pyramid and overwhelming healthcare facilities, the need for new capabilities in outpatient healthcare is becoming increasingly clear. Skills such as IT affinity are particularly in demand, and are often crucial in today's practice.

One of the prominent career changers is Agron Krasniqi, who was originally a photographer and web designer. During the pandemic, he took over the management of a vaccination and testing center and relied on a careful change in the organization of the practice. So he suggested changing the practice without making appointments. His wife, Teuta Krasniqi, who is changing careers as a pediatric nurse and geriatric nurse, is currently training to become a nutritionist.

Experience reports from community practice

In the Birkengarten group practice, various career changers share their time in the healthcare industry. Ivette Edelmann, who works as an office worker, has acquired technical understanding and is responsible for telephone and registration coordination as well as the use of digital tools. Her colleague, Donata Graf, learned practical assistance from experienced colleagues and takes care of telephone registrations. Checklists for the telephone service for emergency assessment are an important tool.

Johanna Troglauer, who is responsible for quality management, has taken over the structured training of new employees. She emphasizes the importance of discussing the role of career changers and their integration into the team. Christiane Moreano's recommendations are helpful here, such as introducing a structured onboarding program and mentors to support newcomers.

Continuing professional development in the healthcare sector

Another aspect that is crucial for career changers is further training. The healthcare sector is one of the fastest growing areas, and many career changers struggle to get a foothold. Medical knowledge is often not mandatory, but organizational understanding and communication skills with patients are essential. In this sense, various institutions, such as the IHK, offer certificate courses in practical management that are specifically designed for career changers. These courses cover essential topics such as administrative processes, appointment scheduling and data protection to make it easier to get started and increase efficiency in medical practices IHK further training.

Other providers such as TÜV Rheinland also offer further training opportunities for aspiring practice managers with a focus on e-health and digital working methods. Participants can look forward to a wide range of exciting content, from general anatomy to health advice and prevention. There is also the option of using education vouchers from the German Pension Insurance to finance further training TÜV courses.

The combination of personal commitment and professional training makes career changers valuable team members who enrich the healthcare sector and bring new life to practices. It is therefore up to the practices themselves to ensure that these talents are integrated well.
