Racing cyclists on Martin-Luther-Straße: Residents raise the alarm!
Munich is currently at the center of cycling with the latest developments that offer both progress and challenges. In recent weeks there has been a lot of discussion about the city's bike paths, particularly about the use and safety of this new infrastructure.
Some residents on Martin-Luther-Straße are raising the alarm: racing cyclists repeatedly use the bike path there as if it were a real race track. A citizen reported an incident in which she was insulted while crossing the street despite the green light. The situation has worsened since the cycle path was established in 2023. The traffic experiment, which has since become part of the political debate in the Obergiesing-Fasangarten district committee and in the neighboring district of Untergiesing-Harlaching, converted two car lanes into cycle paths. The result? A dense traffic jam, which further frustrates residents.
Security debate among district politicians
Politicians such as SPD MP Andreas Streitmüller emphasize that the increasing problem of racing cyclists makes urgent control and sanctioning measures necessary. Petra Jakobi from the Greens supports this demand and advocates more controls for rule violations. The CSU, on the other hand, emphasizes that the concerns of critical citizens must be taken into account when evaluating the road changes in order to ensure the safety of all road users.
On Monday morning an opening ceremony for a new cycle path took place at the Victims of National Socialism Square. Among the guests were construction officer Jeanne-Marie Ehbauer and Munich's second mayor Dominik Krause. The new cycle highway, which has already completed two years of construction and cost 13.4 million euros, has been officially opened. This section extends 600 meters between Lenbachplatz and Brienner Straße and, over a width of 2.80 meters, offers a clear separation from car traffic with a 75 centimeter wide protective strip.
Part of bigger plans
This new cycle path is just part of the comprehensive “National Cycling Plan 3.0”, which aims to make cycling in Germany more attractive and safer by 2030. The plan places great emphasis on a consistent cycling infrastructure and provides for various funding programs supported by the federal, state and local governments. The federal government takes on an active role as a moderator and coordinator to improve the quality of life through high-quality cycle paths.
In Munich, a section has already opened in Garching and the next part is being planned, with the section between the Victims of National Socialism Square and Brienner Strasse being just the beginning. Costs of around 8.6 million euros are expected for this section. The current design competition for the urban development upgrade of traffic areas will be presented to the city council in the spring.
Overall, these developments show how important the discussion about cycling infrastructure is for the city's quality of life. At the same time, the concerns and safety of all road users must be guaranteed. It will be exciting to see how the situation will develop in the coming months and whether suitable solutions will be found to both promote cycling and take residents' complaints into account.
