Musikhaus Hieber Lindberg: Move saves 101 years of tradition!
Another traditional business remains in Munich. The Hieber Lindberg music store, which has been a fixture for more than 101 years, is moving after 30 years at the old location at Sonnenstrasse 15 to a new branch in the immediate vicinity, namely at Sonnenstrasse 19. The move, which will be completed on June 30, 2025, has proven to be a big challenge, but all 58 employees can stay in the new store, which is good news for the team.
The decision to move was dictated by rising fixed costs, which ultimately spiraled into exorbitant rent. Managing director Helmuth Klein and his team spent months looking for new, affordable premises before a call from acquaintances led to the discovery of the new rooms. These not only offer lower rents, but also 1,800 square meters of space - a decrease from the previous 2,800 square meters, resulting in the reduction of guitars on display from 600 to 300 and pianos from 20 to 14. Nevertheless, the store's offerings remain impressive and diverse.
Moving as a way to salvation
Hieber Lindberg has an eventful history. The original store was founded in 1884 by Max Hieber and has been through a lot since then, including destruction in World War II and a merger in 2006 with music retailer Ernst Lindberg. The current financial difficulties result not only from high rents, but also from the pressure of online trading and falling profits. A move to Reichertshofen, 70 kilometers away, threatened to close the business forever.
With the move to Sonnenstraße 19, Hieber Lindberg remains in a valued neighborhood. The traditional shop Foto Sauter will also be moving from house number 26 to 21 on Sonnenstrasse. The new Sauter branch is planning to open on August 1st and 2nd, 2025 and promises visitors free workshops and offers, which is another sign of the vitality of retail in Munich.
A city full of traditional shops
Hieber Lindberg's move is further proof of how important traditional shops are for Munich's cityscape. There are numerous shops in the city center with an impressive history and excellent customer service. Above all, names like Sport Schuster, Hirmer Herrenmode and Dallmayr are on everyone's lips. Each of these stores tells its own story, and many are still family-owned and feature personal service that has become rare these days.
Overall, Hieber Lindberg's move is not only a business success, but also a sign of hope for stationary retail in Munich. Despite the challenges that the future may bring, the city remains a place where trade with history and tradition forms an important foundation. The new premises promise an exciting future for the music store and its loyal customers, who can look forward to the opening on July 1, 2025.
