Munich celebrates the founding of the city: Adventurous weekend for families!
Today, June 14, 2025, the city's founding festival will be celebrated with great jubilation in Munich. This festival is all about the connection between water and urban development, an indispensable part of Munich that is impressively brought into focus here. At the Alten Hof, visitors can experience the effects of the Isar on the cityscape up close. Little adventurers have a lot to look forward to, as there are various stations waiting for them in the Old Court, including a medieval wash house, a monastery kitchen and historical workshops where they can get actively involved.
The children's program in the Alter Hof extends throughout Saturday and Sunday and ends at 6 p.m. There are also numerous child-friendly activities at the city founding festival. Odeonsplatz becomes a real children's paradise, while exciting rides await the little ones at Wittelsbacherplatz. A craftsman's village rounds off the diverse offering and makes the children's hearts beat faster.
Participatory activities and exhibitions
A highlight for anyone interested is the “Museums & Castles in Bavaria” info point, which is also located in the Alter Hof. There is a participatory program here under the motto “Building relationships – then and now!” offered. On both days between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., children and young people can make bracelets and pendants and try out traditional craft techniques from the Middle Ages. In addition, the exhibition “WERKSAM. Hohenzollern women's networks in the late Middle Ages” opens its doors and provides information about the fascinating roles of women from the Hohenzollern dynasty. Entry to the exhibition is free for everyone.
But there are exciting events not only in Munich. Anyone planning a trip should not forget Hohenzollern Castle. This impressive castle, which lies between Lake Constance and Stuttgart in the Swabian Alps, is the ancestral seat of the Hohenzollern family. The neo-Gothic three-wing complex, built in the 19th century, is one of the 100 most visited attractions in Germany. Visitors can marvel at the impressive treasury, the Count's Hall and the Christ and Michael Chapel and even take part in children's tours as part of special tours.
Family-friendly offer
Attention families! Hohenzollern Castle offers numerous programs for the whole family, including the exciting “knight training”. A climb to the castle takes about 30 minutes on foot, but it is also possible to use a transfer bus from April to October. The castle is open all year round and enjoys annual visitor numbers of up to 300,000 people. However, there is a strict ban on drones throughout the area in order to preserve the wonderful views in their natural form.
Whether at the city founding festival in Munich or at Hohenzollern Castle – June offers exciting experiences for young and old. So go ahead and enjoy the variety!
