Despite these dramatic events, the German Weather Service (DWD) reported calmer weather conditions from Monday morning and lifted the current warnings.
Paderborn in a state of emergency
The extent of the storm was particularly clear in Paderborn: a roof of a 5,000 square meter printing plant collapsed under masses of water, and the damage to the production hall is estimated to be in the millions. Parts of the ceiling at a supermarket also collapsed and water entered the local hospital, causing restrictions on elevator operations. The situation was particularly dramatic in an underground car park, where cars were standing in waist-high water. Walkers also discovered an abandoned car in a rainwater retention basin, raising further questions as to how WDR reported.
The heavy rain also resulted in over 50 fire department calls. Even though there was some property damage, the population is horrified by the extent of the storm. The University in Paderborn reported damage to several buildings and facilities. It is hoped that the long-term effects, especially on the infrastructure, can be resolved soon.
Tornado danger in Germany
Particular attention is now being paid to tornado incidents in the region. DWD experts have mentioned that around 40 tornadoes are registered in Germany every year. It was only in the summer that there were reports of several tornadoes, including in Schleswig-Holstein, where media attention increased due to the weather there. This year, 20 tornadoes have already been confirmed ZDF reported.
Although the fragile weather conditions do not automatically lead to an increased risk of tornadoes, uncertainty and concern about further extreme weather events remain present. What remains is the hope that the upcoming change in the weather will bring calm and the temperatures will be more pleasant in the near future.
