Green oasis in Maxvorstadt: city terrace becomes reality!

In the vibrant Maxvorstadt, directly on Brienner Straße near Stiglmaierplatz, a new city terrace is to be built that will attract both residents and visitors. The non-profit entrepreneur company (gUG) Freiraumviertel has big plans and would like to implement this green gem from August to the end of October. The aim is to create a “green oasis of calm in the urban hustle and bustle” like this tz.de reported.

As part of the project, not only will native, drought-resistant plants make a sustainable contribution to biodiversity, but also numerous seating areas will be created. These offer passers-by and residents space for conversations and relaxation. Jointly planned planting campaigns, information boards and events to raise awareness of nature conservation are also part of the concept. This makes the city terrace a true meeting place for the community.

A step in the right direction

The Maxvorstadt building committee has already discussed the project. Although the Green parliamentary group spoke out in favor of the project, the SPD and CSU expressed some concerns. In particular, SPD parliamentary group member Gesche Hoffmann-Weiss sees the place as unsuitable. Despite these disagreements, a vote on the comprehensive grant occurred, ending in a 10-10 tie. While a majority voted for a reduced subsidy of 5,000 euros and approval of the location, full funding initially failed to materialize. Freiraumviertel applied for more than 7,500 euros because the city itself did not want to provide any funding.

Maxvorstadt, named after King Maximilian I Joseph of Bavaria, is a district full of history and thriving culture that is considered a center for science and art. It was greatly developed in the 19th century under the direction of architect Friedrich Ludwig von Sckell. Today the area is a popular meeting place with its important museums, such as the Glyptothek and the Antikensammlung, as well as lively streets such as Türkenstrasse and Josephsplatz. Munich city tours emphasizes that this long history and the cultural diversity of Maxvorstadt provide the ideal backdrop for the new city terrace.

Sustainable urban development in focus

Another important aspect of the new project is its integration into Munich's sustainable urban development. The city aims to create a dense mix of living, working, shopping and leisure in order to keep journeys short for its citizens and at the same time protect the environment. The City of Munich has taken numerous measures for environmentally friendly urban planning, including the mandatory installation of photovoltaic systems in new development areas by 2030. The city terrace fits harmoniously into the existing strategy and will make a valuable contribution to the quality of life in Maxvorstadt.

The Freiraumviertel initiative has already gained experience with similar projects in other parts of the city and was also recognized as a prizewinner in the Stadtsparkasse München's “Munich's Heroes of the Future” competition. It will be exciting to see how the plans develop and what positive impulses the city terrace will bring to the community.
