Tram building in Johanneskirchen: Government stops Stadtwerke again!

The planned tramstrasse in Johanneskirchen is on the brink again. On July 3, 2025, Stadtwerke Munich (SWM) should start with soil samples on the route, but this work was canceled due to an urgent message from the government of Upper Bavaria (Rob). Rob advises the SWM to refrain from further investigations for the time being, since the consent of the responsible supervisory authority is still pending. The construction stop comes at an unfortunate time, because the preparations for the 700-meter-long tram connection route from Cosimastraße to the S-Bahn station Johanneskirchen should have already started.

This delay is not the first: there were problems with the project in the past. In 2023, tree felling and cables were stopped because the legal interviews were misinterpreted. In the current approval process, the municipal utilities also expressed different opinions on the legal situation. A lawyer who represents the opponent of the route building sees another breakdown in a series of misfortunes around the Tram Johanneskirchen.

building permit and preparations

In order to continue the work, the municipal utilities would have to submit an application for approval and explain the need for soil investigations. The preparatory work for the tram route, which 149 trees, including 89 are under the tree protection regulation, endangered greatly. Mayor Dieter Reiter (SPD) demands that the trees are preserved on the route, which meets the resistance of the residents who complain about noise pollution and the loss of green spaces.

These ongoing difficulties in the Tram project in Johanneskirchen can have a negative impact on the planning and implementation of new traffic solutions in Munich. The Munich Verkehrsgesellschaft (MVG) plans the new line of the Tram-Westtangente, which is supposed to connect five districts in western Munich. This measure is intended to significantly improve the traffic situation.

moment in transport policy

The MVG has already announced that after receipt of the planning approval notice, implementation of the West Tangente project will begin. The first section, which runs between Agnes-Bernauer-Straße and Ammersestrasse, is scheduled to go into operation by the end of 2025. The construction is divided into several sections, and a lot is already done for the traffic infrastructure in the neighboring districts, such as the installation measures for water and gas.

With over 3,700 trees in the project area, around 90 percent should be preserved, which reassures residents and environmentalists. It will be an exciting time for Munich traffic policy: While the municipal utilities are fighting the challenges at Tramtrasse in Johanneskirchen, MVG promises progress in other areas that are supposed to improve mobility in the city.

The current situation is a clear indication of how complex and challenging infrastructure projects can be. With so many participants and opinions, it remains to be seen how the situation around Tramstrasse in Johanneskirchen is developing. tz.de and sueddeutsche.de reports throughout the latest developments, while the MVG is promising new building permits and the citizens about the progress of the tram-westtangente informed. mvg.de provides exciting insights into the planned measures for better networking. The Munich team are looking forward to the next steps.
