Flag football inspires students in the Kreuzviertel – the new sports trend!

In an exciting activity, the tenth graders from the secondary school in the Kreuzviertel tried out flag football. As part of the media project “Class!” The students were able to immerse themselves in the world of the popular team sport and demonstrate their throwing and catching skills. Class 10a, under the guidance of teacher Bettina Lanwehr, showed great commitment and interest in the dynamic game, which requires not only fitness but also strategic thinking. The event was organized by wn.de in cooperation with the 1st American Sport Club (ASC) in Münster, where the Blackhawks and Mammuts football clubs play an important role.

A varied program was offered during the event, which began with an intensive warm-up. Under the watchful eyes of the coaching team, consisting of Stefan Walczak, Marius Dünschede and Eiko Stürenburg, the students were able to carry out various exercises for catching, throwing and tactics. Flag football, which will make its debut at the Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 2028, has experienced a real upswing in Germany and Europe in recent years. This sport is particularly popular in Münster, which is reflected, among other things, in the Blackhawks' promotion to the second Bundesliga.

Flag Football: A sport for everyone

Flag football is not only a fascinating game, but also a sport that can be enjoyed by many ages and genders. Vikiddy, an organization with over 25 years of experience, offers flag football courses for children as young as five. With training facilities in various districts of Vienna, such as the 16th district or Svetelskystrasse in the 11th district, the little ones can take their first steps towards team spirit and sporting fairness. Vikiddy also cooperates with the Dacia Vikings and the Dark Angels to promote young talents and motivate them to take part in the FLJ youth championship. You can find out more about this at vikiddy.com.

Interested students were given the opportunity to register for further training evenings, which take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 p.m. at Sentruper Höhe in Münster. Coaches praised the students' achievements and warmly invited them to continue participating in the training sessions to improve their skills and develop even more team spirit.

A look at the international flag football scene

Flag football has also made a name for itself internationally, particularly in the USA and Mexico, where it is considered one of the leading sports. As olympics.com reports, the USA and Mexico put in outstanding performances in both the men's and women's events. Prominent tackle football players like Patrick Mahomes are also showing interest in this sport, which adopts some of the rules of American football but at the same time has its own unique character. The ball carriers are not tackled but are stopped by pulling off a flag, which makes the game particularly accessible.

With increasing interest and development in countries such as Germany, Japan and Canada, flag football is likely to continue to grow in popularity and shine on the international stage. The upcoming adventure at the Los Angeles Olympics represents a special opportunity to introduce the sport to a wider audience and promote new talent.
