Shock attack in Fürstenfeldbruck: cyclist is hit by a car!

There was an unfortunate accident in Fürstenfeldbruck on Friday, May 30th, in which a 12-year-old cyclist was injured. The Weekly Gazette reports that the incident took place around 3:50 p.m. on Josef-Kistler-Strasse when the girl suddenly drove off the right footpath onto the street. The 52-year-old driver of a Smart had no way of braking in time. The collision was unavoidable.

The consequences were serious: the 12-year-old was thrown onto the hood by the impact, hit the windshield and fell. Fortunately, she only suffered minor injuries and was taken to hospital for a medical evaluation, while the driver was uninjured. The damage to the car and bicycle is estimated to be in the low four-digit range, with the front bumper and windshield of the car being affected.

Accident statistics among children

This incident highlights the safety situation of cyclists, especially the younger generation. According to a study, almost 18% of 10 to 17 year olds in Germany feel unsafe on their way to school. In larger cities this proportion even rises to 24%. MDR highlights that this uncertainty affects both pedestrians and cyclists.

Parents and schools are called upon to improve this situation. According to the traffic watchdog and several educational institutions, children need to be familiarized with traffic rules at an early stage. This education is essential to reduce the number of accidents and increase safety on the way to school. In fact, children can be physically ready for road use as early as the age of 10, but fewer and fewer children are able to ride a bike safely.

Traffic education and challenges

The increasing number of accidents among children can be explained not only by a lack of safety, but also by declining motor skills. The corona pandemic, less exercise and increasing digital distraction mean that more and more children are unable to confidently master the basics of cycling. The ADAC recommends that children should only be allowed to ride alone after they have passed the cycling test in primary school in order to avoid excessive demands.

Furthermore, a growing trend is pointed out: many parents bring their children to school by car, which further limits their experience in traffic. It is all the more important that schools and daycare centers approach children with activities that promote physical activity and thus support them.

In summary, the incident in Fürstenfeldbruck not only shows the dangers in road traffic, but also the urgent need for increased traffic education. This is the only way to ensure that our children are safer and more self-confident on the road.
