Irritant gas scandal in Munich school: 17 injured cause chaos!

A tranquil Thursday in Munich-Allach took a dramatic turn on June 6, 2025, when numerous students and teachers suffered breathing difficulties and eye irritation after a gas leak at the local school. The alerted fire department was sent to the school at 12:25 p.m. with a large contingent of emergency services, where evacuation measures were immediately initiated. As Radio Gong reports, the situation was tense for those affected.

The Munich fire department carried out extensive hazardous substance measurements using respiratory protection to locate the source of the problem. Fortunately, the measurements showed that no dangerous substance could be detected. After the school building was deemed safe, students were allowed to return. Nevertheless, there were 17 injured people, including both students and teachers, who still had to be treated in Munich clinics. Another 26 people who were uninjured received support on site.

Background and investigations

The police have now started an investigation into the cause of the gas leak. It is currently unclear whether there is a technical defect, an accident or an intentional act. Such incidents have recently become more common in Germany. According to Spiegel, irritant gas incidents in schools are increasing, and several similar events have been reported in Baden-Württemberg and in recent days Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania reported. An example from Lichtenstein in Saxony shows that 42 people, including 38 children, were injured by irritant gas in a cafeteria.

The situation is worrying as the police have not been able to detect any of the irritant gases used in these cases. These events raise questions. In another incident in Bietigheim-Bissingen, a strong-smelling liquid was reported in the school center, which in turn resulted in a large-scale operation by the fire brigade and police. Here too, the measurements were carried out without any evidence of a dangerous substance, but school operations were stopped as a precautionary measure.

Authorities response and prevention

The latest developments are not only alarming for the schools affected, but also shed light on safety at educational institutions throughout Germany. In response to the incidents, stronger security measures and training for teachers and students are being considered to ensure a quicker response to similar threats. In the case in Allach, it remains to be seen what findings the police's investigation results will provide.

The entire school community in Allach is facing an important phase in which trust in their surroundings may have to be rebuilt. Parents, students and teachers are challenged to work through these concerns together as they return to everyday school life.
